Iac-02-m.3.07 Dimensioning of Aeronautical Satellite Services
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper addresses the traffic dimensioning for aeronautical services. Specifically, it focuses on wireless services such as UMTS and W-LAN in aircraft cabins that connect the passenger via satellite to terrestrial infrastructure. A multi-service model is presented with specific bit rate and traffic characteristics for manifold services. Furthermore it is discussed how different satellite systems can serve the traffic demand arising from the long-haul traffic over oceans and land masses. Finally, a numerical example shows the expected traffic for a geostationary satellite system.

Capacity and System Design Issues for Aeronautical Broadband Communications via Satellite
The paper discusses various system aspects of future aeronautical services via satellite. Both, commercial aeronautical broadband satellite communications (AirCom) for passengers and air traffic management (ATM) are considered. An integrated global system design approach is presented, and key R&D issues along this path are discussed. Some focus is laid on geographic satellite coverage and const...
متن کاملSatellite Capacity Dimensioning for In-flight Internet Services in the North Atlantic Region
In this paper we provide an estimation of the net satellite capacity needed to reliably offer In-Flight Internet services to aircraft flying in the North-Atlantic region. For this work we took into account the expected dynamic usage of AirCom (Aeronautical Communications) Internet services, the average aircraft’ cabin configurations and the characteristics of the North Atlantic routes. INTRODUC...
متن کاملFlow Control and Active Queue Management for Integrated Services in an Aeronautical Satellite Network
The IP-based broadband aeronautical satellite network will provide numerous new applications and services for both airspace system operations and passenger communications. Application of commercial off the shelf technologies and techniques has the potential to make network operations economically and technically realizable. However the performance of data communication protocols and application...
متن کاملAeroTCP: A Splitting Transport Protocol for an IP-based Satellite Network Supporting Aeronautical Communications
The IP-based Broadband Aeronautical Satellite Network will provide numerous new applications and services for both airspace system operations and passenger communications. However, the performance of data communications protocols and applications over such systems is dramatically degraded, especially the Internet TCP/IP protocol suite. In this paper, we propose a new transport protocols for sat...
متن کاملEstablishing Wireless Communications Services via High-Altitude Aeronautical Platforms: A Concept Whose Time Has Come?
0163-6804/97/$10.00 © 1997 IEEE here are two well-established methods for providing wireless communication services: terrestrially based systems, as used in cellular and personal communications systems (PCS), and satellites. Each concept has its specific advantages and disadvantages. The high-altitude aeronautical platform (HAAP) technology, we will argue, would have many of the advantages of b...
